Can you spray enamel over latex paint?
You can spray water-based enamel over latex paint, but you will need to wait for it to dry before painting the next coat. You can also paint oil-based enamel over latex primer, but this may not be the best option because the primer will absorb the enamel and make it look cloudy.
Latex enamel is easily the more durable of the two. And Floetrol is a paint conditioner. The whole purpose of it is to aid in applying the paint.
The least amount necessary means that you’ll need to find some scrap. I don’t bother with viscosity cups as they are in a factory or industrial setting. But I don’t see them necessary.

Use Floetrol. It’s the consistency of dish soap and lets the paint flow more easily. And use as little water as you can. You’ll have to use more coats than average, and the final finish may be less than spectacular.
Can you use latex over primer?
If it were me I’d clean up the latex, do any patching necessary with something designed to work with latex paint, and then use an acrylic latex primer.
I like to paint my kitchen and bath with two coats of high-quality latex paint. You could dilute it a little bit for primer, but I think it’s better to use a primer that’s only for those two areas.
Use leftover paint [thinned 5-10% with water] as the primer. The sheetrock and mud I need to prime will equal about 144 pieces of sheetrock, most of which will be hidden behind a floating vanity. 90% of the bathroom already has paint on it, so it should seal well.
I was not trying to cut corners as much as save a few dollars (I’m a little over budget already) using something I had already.
You can apply water-based, latex, and waterborne paints over a solvent-based primer.
Is your paint made of oil or latex?
Many people ask how to know whether the current paint on their houses, such as ceiling, walls, and trim, is oil or latex.
Latex paint usually shows more brush strokes and roller marks than oil. It is so easy to make dents in it using your fingernails.
As for oil paint, it dries much more challengingly and has a brittle surface. You can’t easily dent the oil paint with your fingernails.
Apply a wet rag or Q-tip to the stain to test what type of paint. If the paint smears or falls off onto the rag, it’s latex. But if not, then it’s oil.
You can also use ‘Goof Off’ or ‘Oops’ to try this, but the results won’t be noticeable as fast.
Why shouldn’t you use spray paint?
Aerosol spray paint is almost always hard enamel. Natural gourds will expand and contract with changes in temperature and humidity.
Nothing wrong with spraying. Thin a good quality exterior latex primer and then paint if required for your sprayer. Apply a coat of primer and several coats of the exterior latex.
Spraying has a less-thick layer of paint and a professional quality result. I sand in between layers of paint to get it very smooth.
Apply the base coat with a roller and spray on the stencil graphics. You can then use sandpaper to smooth it out and lay another coat if necessary.
Then Lay on the stencils, spray a light coat, wait 10 minutes, spray on another coat, wait 10 minutes, spray another coat to final cover everything. Then remove the stencil after 10 minutes.
How to get a clear finish over paint?
Topcoat is a flexible finish that can be glossy, semi-gloss, or satin – whatever you prefer. Stay away from car finishes – they’re not compatible with wood.
Oil-based and latex paints are usually cheaper but have a shorter lifespan. They can also be odorous. Lacquer paints are more affordable, have better longevity, and are the best option for the job you have at hand.
Although the paint may have thoroughly dried, it is still noticeable that items are more likely to stick. I suggest applying a thinner coat of paint top-coated with a protective clear coat.
I recently started using CAB acrylic lacquer paint by Sherwin Williams. They could tint the paint to the necessary color using special colorants.
I would suggest the following process for wood paint: the first coat should be an epoxy primer, followed by a base coat, and finished by clear paint. Either of these will give you a glossy finish.
For clean-looking furniture, I recommend first painting over any stains with latex paint, then applying a coat of water base polyurethane.
Water-based paint provides color options almost as vast as oil-based paint. What’s more, it finishes hard and doesn’t need an additional coat.
How to deal with things stuck with latex?
Is your concern with latex that things tend to stick to complementary surfaces more than on materials of lower quality?
Non-blocking paint is an essential factor if you’re ever wondering what to use. It’s durable, easy to clean, and doesn’t allow air bubbles.
You don’t need to apply another coat over that. I will call Sherwin Williams and ask if they can do something.
Rather than tint the lacquer itself, I buy a lacquer under coater (from Sherwin Williams) tinted to the paint color and then a topcoat with clear lacquer.
How to choose the right type of paint?
You can get all your painting supplies from your local store or paint counter. Just visit them, and they’ll help you make a plan.
But for the right type, it depends on your need.
Enzyme cleaning, steaming, and washing are never guaranteed to remove all paint. And the water in latex paints can reactivate old paint. That is why I use oil-based Kilz to seal the walls.
My sister is a pro to using latex over oil. I heard that she was painting a textured ceiling using a roller. She knew what could happen, so she painted it with latex first.
Oil-based primer is a poor choice, and a latex-based primer is far better. All latex paints merely coat the surface. Otherwise, the new paint will leave you with lots of fisheyes.
