King bed vs California King bed
I recently traded in my old queen-size bed for a king-size bed, and I couldn’t be happier. I purchased some nice king-sized “velvet flannel” sheets on Amazon to complete the new look. They are so cozy!
King-sized sheets and comforters/blankets are quite pricey. Queen bedding is plentiful and less expensive. I like to change the look of my bedroom fairly often.
That double bed only lasted two years. Soon we got the king.
King-size beds are a pain to move. The box springs are usually two separate pieces, which is good, but the mattress itself is huge and unwieldy. When you move into a place with tiny doorways, getting your bed in cannot be easy.
Not to worry. Besides spending a fortune on bedding, there are many other ways to decorate your bedroom!
Does IKEA have a California King bed?
Well, yes.
Excellent quality, all-around customization, and many bed choices to suit every need.
Beds these days don’t come with the kinds of warranties that they came with back in the days. Ours is 11 years old and beginning to show its age.
I like a really firm mattress. I wouldn’t say I like pillow tops. That’s my idea of mattress comfort.
When you buy your mattress, look at aspects of the mattress technology. Some beds have internal supports that are supposed to keep depressions from forming. Better mattresses will also have some extra support on the walls.
The lifespan of a spring mattress is 10 years max, after which the springs begin to slack. DUX beds use a unique spring system that uses a special spring system.
The lifespan of padding is even less, maybe five years for foam. Latex lasts much longer but has a lot of heat and moisture retention, as mentioned earlier.
IKEA California King bed frames
Does IKEA have it?
The answer is no. There are no California King bed frames available at IKEA. Ikea does not sell any of their beds in a California King size. However, this doesn’t mean that you can’t find a bed frame to accommodate your needs.
Many retailers offer king-sized beds and California King bed frames. The most popular ones are Amazon and Wayfair.
We got our IKEA foam mattress quite a while ago. At first, it seemed too pricey for our budget. But now I can see how that money was worth it after sleeping on it every night.
I’ve been testing the pillow out, and I’m impressed with the comfort level & how it feels like a substitute for my usual hoodie! It’s not yet clear how it will do for longevity, but it sure is easier to move.
The furniture company IKEA is also known for its bed frames. The design of this bed frame is quite different from other companies, but it’s still a good option if you’re on a budget and looking for a faux wood veneer design.
My wife and I both enjoy it – she even joined me the first time we used it. It is comfortable, and we would recommend it.
I had an IKEA firm mattress and loved it. Then we “upgraded” to a Sealy or a Serta, which started well but turned to crap within two years. So we dumped that and went to a king-size memory foam mattress.
My best advice is to sneak into a mattress store and avoid catching the salesperson’s attention. Then, do the goldilocks thing and go and lay down on the mattresses.
Most mattresses will feel good for the first few minutes you lay down on them. You need to try a good 20 minutes on a bed before knowing if it’s right for you.
TempurPedic California King bed
I liked my TempurPedic a lot back then. I’m about 30 pounds heavier now, and the soft surface of the bed doesn’t provide enough support to make up for it. Sometimes my lower back starts hurting after sleeping on it, which would happen when I had an old mattress.
The TempurPedic 4Life is a firm mattress, but it won’t bother you because it has an extra soft feeling. The bed will keep you cool in the summer and warm in the winter.
TempurPedic absorbs most of the movements of the other person. So you don’t get woken up if your partner shifts position. I never bothered with a bed frame, so that might be why my experience has generally been.
So go bigger if you have space, and go memory foam if you can afford it. It’s different from a Tempurpedic (firmer) and a little cheaper.
DUX California King bed
DUX beds are the best. They’re expensive, but since they last much longer than other beds, the cost per night is not high.
If the dealer is OK with it, the best thing you can do is borrow the bed for a couple of nights. Just beware that any store that lets you borrow a bed may sell you a mattress that has already been used.
Try lying on your side, in your usual sleeping position (i.e. often with your legs bent), Then have someone check back: Your spine should be more or less straight.
A top pad is a really good idea, too, if for no other reason than as it gets dirty and sweaty over the years. Foam top pads are cheaper and have better ventilation but less support, and they don’t last very long. Latex top pads last much longer but do not ventilate as well.
Elevation beds should be chosen if you read or watch TV a lot in your bed. The elevation system doesn’t pay for itself.
DUX beds are awesome, but they’re incredibly expensive in the US. Air circulation is no longer an issue (they were made with a plastic lining that causes nearly everyone to sweat badly). The real problem is they do not “spring.”
Any good store will have some 30-60 day trial where you must keep it for a minimum of 30 days.
Very few stores (depending on state law) will have a loaner to give. Several states make it illegal to resell a used mattress.
Other brands for California King bed
Here are some other brands for California King bed that you might want to try:
- International Bedding Co. Europa something or other. So far, I like it.
- Sleep Number bed. It’s awesome. When the bf and I move in together, we will get another, better model and demote mine to a guest bed.
- Caveats: It’s essentially an aircraft-carrier-sized block of foam rubber. When you take it out of the wrapper the first week, it smells high heaven. I’m pretty sure our current mattress dates to ~1995-6, and it’s fine. It’s a spring mattress with a pillow-top.
- Simmons Beautyrest is a bed that is almost half off MSRP.
Japanese-style futon
You may also want to try this kind of bedding. It’s like the name, Japanese-style futon. Not like a sofa bed, but there’s no way a double bed would fit in it.
I still wake up kicking off the sheets and feeling hot, even when using a ceiling fan and a stand-up fan. Sometimes my head sweats so much that it feels frozen, but my body burns up.
The huge problem with memory foam is how they handle the heat. That’s the first thing I’d be investigating about latex beds if I was looking.
That said, I’m not the fondest of sleeping on hard floors or having to sleep fully on the back. One of my coworkers raves about them, and I’ve slept at his house. It was so good.
Pillow-tops are also pretty.
